The City of Lodi has named Captain Ricardo Garcia as its next Chief of Police. Garcia was born and raised in Lodi, graduated from Tokay High School and has a special connection to the community. He has been a champion of community oriented policing, community engagement, and relationship building. He led the City's first Spanish speaking citizen's academy earlier this year.
Garcia joined the Lodi Police Department in 2007 and has held various roles including Patrol Officer, Detective, Watch Commander and Support Services Captain giving him a comprehensive understanding of the organization and its operations. He currently serves as the department’s recruitment manager and has had great success attracting officers in a very challenging environment.
“Throughout my career, I have worked diligently to connect with all members of our diverse community, understanding the importance of mutual respect and trust. I am incredibly grateful and honored to have been selected as the next Chief of the Lodi Police Department. It's truly a privilege to have the opportunity to lead such a remarkable organization and the exceptional individuals who work here" Garcia said.
Incoming Interim City Manager Andrew Keys announced Garcia will be Lodi's next Police Chief saying he is confident Garcia is the right person to lead the department into the future.
"He has broad experience in Lodi PD and has the respect and admiration of his peers and subordinates. He values the support and trust that has been built with the community over the years,” Keys said. “He also recognizes that trust and support is not universal and that he is uniquely positioned to reach communities Lodi PD needs to engage. I look forward to seeing those connections made and the public safety improvements that will follow.”
Mayor Mikey Hothi participated in the first round of interviews to qualify potential candidates. "I strongly support Captain Garcia as the next leader of Lodi PD. His dedication to the community, strong relationship skills and humble leadership style are what we need in the next Police Chief. Representation also matters and with Chief Garcia a new segment of Lodi sees a police chief that represents them."
Chief Garcia will officially take the reins December 31, 2023 following the retirement of current Chief Sierra Brucia. A swearing in ceremony for Chief Garcia will take place on January 2, 2024.
