Tree City USAThe City of Lodi is a Tree City USA member. The Tree City USA® program, sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities that more than 93 million Americans call home.

Objectives

The below attachment is the official City of Lodi tree list (PDF). Any other type(s) of street trees may be permitted if requested in writing, and the requested trees conform to our maintenance objectives. These objectives include selecting tree species that Large Treeare:

  1. Deep-rooted and do not destroy sidewalks, sewers or water lines
  2. Not a nuisance to public safety or health by generating undesirable fruit, foliage, and/or pollen
  3. Compatible with our climate and soils
  4. Aesthetically suitable for the location and street for which they were requested

All requests must be approved in writing by a Streets Division Supervisor.

Guidelines

  • Minimum tree well size is 5 feet by 5 feet. (25 square feet) or 4 feet by 6 feet (24 square feet).
  • Larger tree wells are preferred such as:
    • 6 feet by 6 feet (36 square feet), 8 feet by 8 feet (64 square feet), or 10 feet by 10 feet (100 square feet).
  • The greater air to soil contact of the larger tree wells enhances tree growth and health.
  • Plant small sized trees in small tree wells or park strips. Size the tree well or park strip to the size and needs of the tree type.
  • Plant low growing trees (20 to 40 feet maximum height) under power lines.
  • 15 gallon sized plants are the minimum acceptable size for street trees.
