Neighborhood Watch
A recent national survey showed that a burglary is committed every eight seconds in this country. The Lodi Police Department is committed to reducing these crimes.
Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention/opportunity reduction program where citizens bands together and work with the Lodi Police Department to combat crime, specifically, but not limited to residential burglary.
The Four Ds to Prevent Crimes
Neighborhood watch groups can take away the criminals opportunity by following the four “Ds.”
Deter
Ways to deter criminals include:
- Alarms
- Children
- Citizen’s patrol
- Dogs
- Know your neighbors
- Nosy neighbors
- Whatever makes you feel safer, makes the offender feel more at risk
Deny
Make it hard for the criminal to get in your home by:
- Keeping doors and windows locked
- Closing your garage door
- Keeping landscaping cut back from entrance ways and windows
- Not giving a criminal an easy target
Delay
Make your home look “lived in” even when you are out.
- Use timers for lights, TV, and radio.
- Don’t draw or close completely all shades, blinds, or curtains.
- Have a neighbor or friend pick up all mail, newspapers, etc.
- Have the neighbors mow your lawn if you are on vacation or away for an extended period of time
- If you work, have a neighbor pull your trash can up to the house on your trash day
- If you're gone, have a neighbor park their car in your driveway.
Detect
Be observant of your home and surroundings.
- If your home looks like it has been burglarized, do not go in. Go to a neighbor's home and call the police.
- Report suspicious activity
