Lodi Police Department’s SWAT Team Claims Top Spot in Competition
Lodi Ca. May 22, 2004---The Lodi Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) finished first at the 2004 Grass Valley Advanced SWAT Competition in Grass Valley Ca. The Lodi Police Department competed with ten other teams, many of which were much larger agencies. Participants included SWAT teams from Sacramento, Alameda, Livermore and Fremont Police Departments and Sheriff’s departments from Placer, San Joaquin and Eldorado counties. This marks the second time in three years that the Lodi team has claimed the top spot.
Members of the Lodi team were led by Sergeant Lance Hayden and included team members Cpls. Chris Jacobson, Jose Nuno and Fernando Martinez and Officer’s Scott Powell, Mike Oden and Sierra Brucia. Team members trained rigorously for months in order to prepare for this highly physical and challenging competition.
Said SWAT team commander Lt. Gary Benincasa, “our guys trained rigorously for the last four months for this event and I and the rest of the team are so proud of their accomplishment.”
Cpl. Chris Jacobson, a member of the SWAT team for six years, said he has seen the team progress from a competently trained team to that of a highly prepared and synchronized team. He attributes this developmental change to long hours of grueling training both in house and with the Stockton Police Department’s SWAT team.
Captain David Main said, “this really speaks volumes about our teams preparedness and ability to function under extreme circumstances. Our SWAT team enjoys a tremendous amount of credibility not only from within our own organization but from other agencies as well”.
The Grass Valley Advanced SWAT Competition is a grueling three day practical scenario competition which incorporates tactical missions such as hostage rescue and other realistic scenarios, along with shooting and several extremely difficult physical challenges. There were also individual accomplishments worth noting. Sergeant Lance Hayden placed sixth of seventy five participants in overall shooting and Officer Mike Oden placed eleventh. Detective Scot Powell received the top sniper award for the completion.
