SPAY NEUTER PROGRAM A SUCCESS
September 17 - 28th, Spay & Neuter Days, marked the first time ever for a
countywide, coordinated effort to promote the spaying and neutering of pets.
This effort was coordinated by the San Joaquin County Animal Control
Division of the Agricultural Commissioner¹s Office and was a partnership of the
county and the cities of Escalon, Lathrop, Lodi, Ripon, Stockton, and Tracy.
About 30 veterinarians throughout the county supported the effort and
participated in the program by honoring spay and neuter vouchers and setting
aside time to perform the surgeries.
The effort was very successfulÐover 640 pets were spayed or neutered over the
course of the program, with vouchers being redeemable through October. While
the City of Lodi has traditionally held such voucher programs, starting in 1998,
the effort was a new approach for the other agencies that participated.
The vouchers were redeemed as follows:
Unincorporated area of county-55
Escalon-3
Lathrop-3
Lodi-220
Ripon-55
Stockton-110
Tracy-200
The committee, known as the San Joaquin County Committee for Animal Control,
wants to thank the media, who assisted in reaching citizens, and the
veterinarians, who so generously devoted their time to the effort.
The committee also would like to thank the hundreds of citizens who responded
positively to the program and the call to be a responsible pet owner by spaying
and neutering their pets.
