Man arrested with the help of Bomb Squad robot

Details: On January 10, 2006 at approximately 8:15 p.m., Lodi Police officers were dispatched to 2210 Bluejay Way on a report of a man who was threatening suicide.  The man, later identified as 45 year old William John McGregor III, was distraught over the loss of a substantial business opportunity.  McGregor’s estranged wife called 911 requesting assistance from the police.  McGregor retrieved a shotgun from a room and discharged it.  McGregor’s estranged wife fled the residence leaving him alone in the house.  When police arrived, McGregor threatened to shoot any police officer who came near his house, and he again discharged his weapon.

SWAT team members and Critical Incident Negotiating Team (CINT) members arrived and tried to convince McGregor to surrender.  He refused to comply and discharged the weapon a third time.  Due to the potential risk towards police officers on scene a Bomb Squad robot was summoned.  Bomb Squad members of the Lodi and Stockton Police departments responded with the robot in order to confront McGregor.  By now, McGregor had positioned himself in his backyard and refused police commands to surrender.  The Bomb Squad robot gained entry into McGregor’s backyard by knocking down a section of the fence.  Once in the backyard, robot operators used an on-board infrared camera and found a shotgun propped up in a corner of the yard. Approximately ten minutes later robot operators located McGregor lying on the ground behind some decorative boulders.  Commands to surrender were given to McGregor via an on-board external speaker.  McGregor refused to comply so a police K-9 was deployed and he was ultimately taken into custody.  Police officers located two handguns concealed in bushes in the backyard and three other high-powered rifles (with scopes) were located in McGregor’s residence along with approximately 500 rounds of ammunition.

The robot was an invaluable tool which minimized the risk to officers and led to the successful arrest of the suspect.  According to Bomb Squad members, this was the first time the robot was used during the arrest a violent individual.
