1000 Candles to Light Up Veterans Plaza Dedication

April 1, 2002

The Lodi Area Veterans Plaza Foundation announces May 22, 2002 for the dedication of the "All Military Veterans Plaza." The community park is dedicated to All Military Veterans past, present and future. The event will feature one thousand candles lighting the eternal flame.

Lodi, CA The City of Lodi and the All Veterans Foundation are teaming up to dedicate the All Military Veterans Plaza on Wednesday, May 22, 2002 at 6 p.m. The Plaza is adjacent to City Hall located at 221 West Pine Street.

The Plaza is a lasting tribute to all veterans, past, present and future, of all branches of the military.

The monument incorporates various artistic elements representing certain aspects of service to our country. A 21.5-foot stainless-steel obelisk honors courage and graces the plaza entrance. As you walk into the plaza 13 poetry stones are engraved with poetry from historic figures and local artists. An eternal flame representing valor and sacrifice is nested in the center of a 16 foot high curved granite wall which serves as the backdrop for a beautiful waterfall. A 7-foot hand hued solid granite sphere characterizing unity and global service, weighting more than 31 tons, appears to be floating in the blue cobalt pool beneath the waterfall, symbolizing healing. The entire monument is dramatically lit and brings the visitors attention to our American Flag that is the backdrop of the Park.

The first five hundred veterans arriving at the dedication event will be honored with a commemorative ribbon and metal. The Lodi Community Band will entertain participants with patriotic music. The program will begin with the presentation of Colors; uniformed Veterans representing each branch of the military will perform a memorial flower ceremony followed by an invocation and a moment of silence. Guest Speakers include the Mayor, a serviceman home on leave from Afghanistan and the architect that created the plaza design. A ribbon cutting by the All Veterans Foundation members will precede the lighting of the eternal flame. One thousand candles will radiate out from the eternal flame and be passed into the crowd to honor Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice. The program concludes with a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps.
