SECTION 1: PURPOSE
The
purpose of bereavement leave is to provide authorized time off work to attend
the funeral and grieve the death of a member of an employee's immediate family.
SECTION 2: IMMEDIATE
FAMILY
An
employee's immediate family shall be limited to the following:
· spouse · parent ·
grandparent
·
grandparent-in-law ·
parent-in-law · child
·
grandchild ·
son-in-law ·
daughter-in-law
· stepchild · brother · sister
·
half-brother ·
half-sister · foster
parents
· or a
distant relative who was a member of the employee's immediate household at the time of death.
SECTION 3: LEAVE
CHARGES
All
employees are authorized to utilize up to three (3) days of accumulated sick
leave. In cases of necessity, additional
leave may be granted with the approval of the Department Head. Such cases require the employee to submit a
written request to his/her Department Head containing the reason(s) for, and
relevant information pertaining to the extended leave.
SECTION 4: NON-IMMEDIATE
FAMILY
Exceptions
to an employee's immediate family may be made in very unusual cases and then
only after the employee has submitted a written request to the Department Head.
Absence
for an employee who wishes to attend the funeral of a relative (other than
immediate family) or close friend for the hours of the funeral may not use more
than one day of accumulated sick leave.
