Save the Grape Bowl

The Renovation

Efforts to save this historic regional facility involve three phases.  Phase I, appointing a Lodi Grape Bowl Ad Hoc Committee to explore opportunities to determine the Grape Bowl’s fate, was accomplished in 2006.  A Steering Committee assuming a fundraising role was then assembled.  And, interim work designed to correct some of the ADA and public safety deficiencies has already begun.  Approximately $41,000 of corrective work will be completed for the 2007 high school graduation ceremonies and football season.

Phase II

The work in Phase II is now underway.  But its completion is contingent upon raising approximately $1.5 million over the next 12-18 months.  Seed money from the City of Lodi block grant and San Joaquin County Board of Supervisor discretionary funds totaling $675,000 has provided the initial impetus.  The balance of the funding, approximately $825,000, will have to come from other sources which would include community fundraising.  Phase II renovations will address the most significant Grape Bowl disabled accessibility issues.  These improvements include providing plans and specifications (Architectural and Engineering plans), an alternative to the existing unsafe access ramps via a new entrance plaza, ticket office building, elevator, disabled access restrooms and path of travel walkways.  A line item budget is available in the City of Lodi Parks and Recreation offices, located at 125 North Stockton Street.  Plans and specifications for this phase are expected to be completed by year end 2008.

Phase III

Scheduled to occur between years 2008-2010, this phase consists of awarding the contract and the start of construction.  Removing disabled access related barriers will enable the facility to host more productive events.  Expanded services could include soccer, concerts, special events, cricket and many more.  Upgrading the Grape Bowl to include field improvements (e.g. synthetic turf) and improvements to its functionality is the ultimate goal.  The estimated cost to achieve the ultimate goal is $5 - $6 million, which should further enhance the Grape Bowl’s use potential and preserve the long-standing tradition of this regional facility.
