Specialized Fire Department Teams

The fire service has advanced at an accelerated pace over the last few years. This has included many technically challenging areas. To keep abreast of the latest information and techniques the Lodi Fire Department has initiated a team concept. Though all of the personnel are trained in all areas some people receive advanced training. These specialized persons pass this expertise on to the rest of the Fire Department by the means of training and procedures.

Hazardous Material Response Team or HazMat Team:

There are several hundred new chemicals or combinations developed each year. Many of these are carried in a volume that if exposed to the environment become a serious hazard to life and property. This team has the responsibility to evaluate any serious hazard and stabilize the situation so the product can be safely mitigated. With intense specialized training the department has assembled a team that is the first line of defense for the North County in regards to a hazardous materials accident.

Fire Investigation Team:

State and Federal regulations require that every fire must be investigated for cause and origin. Many fires are easily determined as the cause but some are not as easy. This is where this team steps in with their experienced eyes, advanced training and meticulous investigation skills. Though this team is often referred to as an arson team, most fires are eventually found to be accidental.

Technical Rescue:

In the mid 1980's the Fire Service became aware of the growing need for personnel trained in urban rescue. All personnel receive some rescue training but the new advanced skills require extensive continuous training. This department developed the Technical Rescue Team in response to the need. This team is trained to handle situations from construction accidents to severe earthquake damage or water based rescues. With the State funded rescue trailer the team is can rapidly bring its resources where they are needed.

Public Education Specialist:

Most people have heard the message to not play with matches or how a smoke detector is needed in every home. All of these messages have to start somewhere which is when this team steps in. During the year they visit locals schools, businesses and groups to educate the public on safety. When not making a presentation they work behind the scenes developing programs or updating them, like this website.

 Apparatus  Technician:

Over the last 20 years fire apparatus has evolved from being as advanced as a small tractor to a unit incorporating highly advanced technology . During this same time the cost of these units quadrupled. To protect the taxpayers investment and ensure that the units will last their expected 25 years, the technician team was assembled. Their primary task is based in the repair of the units and keeping abreast of changes within the industry. Beyond this they also provide training to the other members of the department on the proper operation and maintenance of these advanced units.

Computer Information Specialist: Just as with any business these days, computers have become an integral part of its operation. Just as with any mid size company support of the equipment and programs is critical. This team fills that niche.

S.C.B.A. Technician:

The S.C.B.A.'s or self contained breathing apparatus is the lifeline in a fire or HazMat incident. Though the units initially were based off the popular Scuba tanks they have dramatically advanced in the recent years. Newer units incorporate radio communication, computer systems and thermal imaging systems. Having the trained personnel available within the department allows most repairs and maintenance to be performed "in house" saving both time and money.
