All About Us...

The Lodi Animal Shelter is a loving organization.  Our goal is to find homes for all the stray and abandoned cats, dogs, etc. , that come to our facility; and we do everything in our power to make sure that the homes we find are good ones! We're bound and determined to break the image of being "Animal Exterminators", because that's not what we are at all!  We are Animal Rescuers!

I know that when most people hear the words 'animal shelter' they think, animal death row; that we immediately put the animals down.  That is simply not true.
We get calls about animals that are causing a disturbance or are running wild in the street and we go and pick them up, then we try and find the animals home or owner, and if we cannot we bring the animal back to the Lodi Animal Shelter.  Sometimes animal owners find that they can no longer handle their animal, or they are moving and cannot bring their pet along.   There are many reasons a person chooses to bring their pet in to us and this is what we do once they get here:

Stray Animals:  When we get a stray animal, we hold them for four days, not counting the day they come in or holidays, to see if the owner comes to claim them.  Then when the fourth day is  up, the animal goes up for adoption as long as the animal is not sick or aggressive.  The animal will stay up for adoption for weeks to months, as long we have room and the animal is healthy.

Owner Released Animals: Animals that are brought in by their owner are 'held' for three days, not counting the day they come in, or holidays.  After three days, unless the animal becomes sick or aggressive, it will go up for adoption.

There is no limit to the amount of time we will hold animals.  All animals will stay up for adoption as long as they do not become sick or aggressive and we have the room.

All animals are provided with a bed and blankets that are frequently changed (nobody wants to sleep in a dirty bed!), fresh water, food, treats and toys.

We never give up on finding our animals a home.  We are continuously updating our  adoption list  at www. petfinder. org and we have a monthly newspaper article with pictures of all of our animals.

LOST & FOUND PET CHECK LIST
Always have a collar, license and ID tags on your pet!
Even if you don't let them outside alone.
Emergencies happen - fires, illness, etc.

LOST/FOUND ANIMALS
AT THE ANIMAL SHELTER:

  • Check every area where animals are kept by asking an Officer or staff volunteer

  • Find out if sick or injured animals are taken somewhere else, and where

  • File a lost/found pet report; include pictures if possible, at every Shelter

  • Post a lost/found pet notice on bulletin boards in libraries, Laundromats, churches, grocery stores, veterinarians, local feed stores, etc

  • Ask to see the DOA (dead on arrival) files at the Shelter

  • Keep visiting the Shelter- stray animals often arrive weeks or months after disappearing

  • If you have moved recently, check other shelters in your old neighborhood- pets frequently return to their former residence

IF YOUR PET IS NOT AT THE SHELTER:

  • Advertise in all local newspapers.  Offer a reward but don't specify the amount

  • Contact other animal agencies, such as veterinary hospitals and pet adoption agencies

  • Inform breed clubs of your missing pet if it is a purebred

  • Canvas your neighborhood on foot, day and night.  Leave notices with your name, address, and phone number(s); pet description and pet's photograph at every house.  Talk to everyone in your neighborhood

  • Post a notice on bulletin boards of your lost animals

  • Check in other counties.  Your animal may have been picked up and taken to another animal shelter

FOUND AN ANIMAL?:

  • Notify your local animal shelter and inform them of your finding

  • Fill out a found animal report, and include picture, if possible

  • Run a free article in your local newspaper about the animal that you have found

  • If you are unable to keep the animal at your house, please take it to your local animal shelter.  They will hold the animal for the holding period and then put the animal up for adoption if no owner has been located

  • Run a found article in the newspaper for about 2 - 3 weeks, the owners of the animal may be out of town

THE LODI ANIMAL SHELTER ENCOURAGES YOU TO LEAVE A PICTURE.  BUT DUE TO THE NUMBER OF CALLS THAT COME IN TO THE SHELTER ABOUT LOST/FOUND ANIMALS, WE CAN ONLY HOLD YOUR PICTURE AND LOST/FOUND ANIMAL REPORT FOR TWO MONTHS.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR PICTURE BACK, PLEASE NOTIFY THE SHELTER BEFORE THE TWO MONTHS ARE UP.  AFTER THE TWO MONTHS, YOUR REPORT AND PICTURES WILL BE DISCARDED.

Questions you should ask yourself
before adopting a pet:

Can you afford a pet?

There are basic expenses that go along with pet ownership that should be considered.  Grooming, pet food, general pet care supplies, as well as annual inoculations and license fees can add up.  If you travel, there will be boarding costs or transportation fees if your pet travels with you.  It would be unfair not to be realistic when budgeting for your new pet, to ensure you are able to sufficiently and comfortably provide for it.

Are you permitted to and do you have room for a new pet?

Many senior citizens are apartment dwellers and must seek the landlord's or management's permission to house a pet.  At times, additional security deposits must be paid for pet ownership to be approved.

All pets, no matter how small, need a place to sleep and room to roam around the house.  Inside cats need to have an area for their litter box, while dogs should have a fenced-in yard in which they can safely play

Do you have time for a pet?

As with people, pets need daily love and attention.  It can be time consuming to devote this daily attention of keeping it clean, well fed, healthy, and providing daily exercise.  Are you ready for this type of commitment?

Do you have patience?

No matter how well trained and behaved a pet is, there will be times when accidents may occur.  Nobody's perfect! When a pet is brought into a new home it need, time to adjust.  It can take up to several months for it to become totally comfortable in its new environment.  When animals are ill, just like humans, they needs an extra dose of tender loving care.  Can you be patient, forgiving, and loving?

Once you've decided to bring a pet into your home, you must decide on whether it will be a dog or a cat.  Both animals have special qualities to offer their owners.

Adoptions Standards & Guidelines
The following standards and guidelines are set up as adoption criteria to be used to accomplish the goals of the adoption program:

  • ALL DOGS AND CATS MUST BE ALTERED.  Spay/Neuter costs are included in the adoption fee.  Animals cannot be adopted from this shelter for breeding purposes.

  • ANIMALS WILL BE PLACED WITH ADULTS to be kept as household pets.  Animals will not be placed as guard dogs.

  • ANIMALS CANNOT BE ADOPTED AS GIFTS.  Animals shall not be given away or sold to another individual.

  • PERMISSION OF THE LANDLORD IS REQUIRED of person(s) living on rental property.  We reserve the right to contact landlord for verification.

  • ALL ANIMALS SHALL HAVE COLLARS with owner verification tags and license tags.  If an animal is lost, a tag may be the only way to return the animal back to you.

  • WE DISCOURAGE THE ADOPTION OF PUPPIES OR KITTENS TO HOMES WITH VERY YOUNG CHILDREN or when there is no one home during the day because these animals need special attention and care.

  • A FENCED YARD OR DOG PEN IS NECESSARY for all dogs.  This protects the dogs from roaming and owners from liability for damage their loose animal may cause.

  • ALL ANIMALS SHALL BE EXAMINED BY A VETERINARIAN at the time of spay and neutering.

  • ALL ANIMALS IN THE SHELTER ARE UNDER THE CARE OF THE CITY OF LODI AND WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE THE ADOPTION OF AN ANIMAL TO A HOME THAT DOES NOT MEET THE ABOVE STANDARDS.  THIS INCLUDES THE RIGHT TO INVESTIGATE NEW HOMES AND REMOVE THE ANIMAL IF IT IS NOT RECEIVING ADEQUATE CARE OR HAS BEEN MISTREATED.

We appreciate your effort to help our animal adoption program meet the high standards we have placed on it.  Without your help the City of Lodi Animal Shelter would not be able to place as many pets within our community in loving, caring homes.  Please provide your input into the program so that we can continue to improve our services to the community.
